Community Members Bring New Books to Lummi Children

3rd Annual MLK Jr. Book Drive

On January 21 and 22 the Center for Service Learning set up shop by Ana’s Kitchen with the goal of collecting book donations to benefit children in the Lummi community! Due to popular request we made a third appearance on the 28th of January. Now that all is said and done we have collected 17 new unread books for kids in your community. The books range in reading level from childhood favorites like Harold and the Purple Crayon to New York Times editor’s choice titles such as Twilight. Other books touch on historical and social issues such as the lives of landmark figures in history including Rosa Parks , Barack Obama and Jim Thorpe. We were luck enough to receive a donation of Flight “…a hilarious and tragic portrait of an orphaned Indian boy who travels back and forth through time in a violent search for his true identity” written by renowned Native author Sherman Alexie. Other notable titles that were donated include:

  • The Tale of Despereaux
  • Flight of the Hummingbird
  • The Encyclopedia of Immaturity
  • Madeline
  • Harry the Dirty Dog
  • Indian Sign Language.

On behalf of the lucky children who will have new books to read the Center for Service Learning staff would like to extend a big THANK YOU!
