Faculty Service Learning in the Classroom: Sociology 110

This past quarter Ane Berrett implemented service learning projects in her Sociology 110 class. While students were exploring the basics of Sociology they were to plan, create and carry out a service learning project. According to Ane the service learning projects were combined with in-depth research and applied sociology. The projects touched on very different community issues that peaked the interests of the students. They ranged from issues surrounding health and wellness to social issues. There was a survey to assess diabetes in the community. Another student explored Gay Rights. A different student researched the needs of woman in the community and took the initiative to plan a woman’s group here on campus. Another project that was taken on addressed the dissemination of information surrounding these types of projects. A student came up with the idea of augmenting one of the Northwest Indian College websites to showcase service learning achievements here on campus. The range of the service learning projects shows the versatility of service learning and that anyone can find a project that they are passionate about!
