{"id":18,"date":"2008-06-03T11:20:07","date_gmt":"2008-06-03T18:20:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nwicnet.nwic.edu\/blogs\/elearning\/2008\/06\/03\/online-learning-discussion-5-23-08\/"},"modified":"2008-06-03T11:20:07","modified_gmt":"2008-06-03T18:20:07","slug":"online-learning-discussion-5-23-08","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nwic.edu\/elearning\/2008\/06\/03\/online-learning-discussion-5-23-08\/","title":{"rendered":"Online Learning Discussion 5-23-08"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here are the notes and the audio from the online learning discussion on 5\/23\/08 for those of you who were unable to attend or who want to review.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/online.nwic.edu\/media\/elearning\/online_learning_discussion-5-23-08.MP3\" title=\"Anarchy Media Player - Right click to download file\"><em>Download<\/em><\/a> Audio from the online learning discussion 5-23-08<\/p>\n<h2>Notes &#8211; Online Learning Discussion<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h3>From a site perspective, what are some of the barriers that students experience with online learning?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>difficulty getting and remembering login in information<\/li>\n<li>students need help and support getting started<\/li>\n<li>it should be a requirement for students to complete CMPS 100 &amp; CMPS 101<\/li>\n<li>courses need to have more discussion and more interaction<\/li>\n<li>students complain that they have difficulty contacting their instructors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>What are your top three challenges?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>students are drawn to the social element of the technology, but are reluctant to use it for academic work<\/li>\n<li>it is difficult to keep in contact with students, students don&#8217;t receive e-mail messages or don&#8217;t access the site<\/li>\n<li>students don&#8217;t have adequate computer skills &#8211; need cmps 100 &amp; 101 first<\/li>\n<li>inadequate access to computers &amp; internet<\/li>\n<li>tribes block necessary sites<\/li>\n<li>we need to assess student access to a computer and to the\u00a0Internet when advising students about online classes<\/li>\n<li>students need to sign a contract at the beginning of a quarter that lays out expectations and requirements<\/li>\n<li>mandate participation through points to get them started interacting and sharing<\/li>\n<li>BOOKS!\u00a0 Could we use more online open education resources in place of textbooks?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>What kind of support do faculty and students need?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>standardized documentation and materials (instructions, expectations)<\/li>\n<li>forum for instructors to share information and techniques<\/li>\n<li>there needs to be an online learning handbook for students (there actually is one, it&#8217;s just e-mailed and not mailed anymore)<\/li>\n<li>students should be required to watch the introduction to Moodle tutorial<\/li>\n<li>sites need to help their students get started in Moodle<\/li>\n<li>students need tech support &amp; help (students having trouble with compatibility using different versions of Office or other word processing programs)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>What students are most\/least effective?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>students that are well prepared, professional, working people tend to be successful in any type of course<\/li>\n<li>math, speach, science lab classes\u00a0are\u00a0difficult to teach online<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>How do we improve the quality of our courses?\u00a0 What is the best way to evaluate and improve our courses?\u00a0 What is the best way to do faculty training?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>We need someone to do an evaluation and assess the courses<\/li>\n<li>Instructors have difficulty carving out the time<\/li>\n<li>Faculty want to be required to take a training course on teaching with Moodle (they have difficulty making time available, so need specific time set aside where they are required to participate) &#8211; We need to use the loan officer technique with faculty<\/li>\n<li>There needs to be more training opportunities<\/li>\n<li>Could we have our own mini-conference on e-learning where faculty share and present ideas?<\/li>\n<li>Faculty need release time to develope course materials<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here are the notes and the audio from the online learning discussion on 5\/23\/08 for those of you who were unable to attend or who want to review.
