{"id":13,"date":"2008-04-16T10:20:24","date_gmt":"2008-04-16T17:20:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nwicnet.nwic.edu\/blogs\/elearning\/2008\/04\/16\/making-the-information-come-to-you\/"},"modified":"2008-04-16T10:21:30","modified_gmt":"2008-04-16T17:21:30","slug":"making-the-information-come-to-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nwic.edu\/elearning\/2008\/04\/16\/making-the-information-come-to-you\/","title":{"rendered":"Making the information come to you"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever found a really good web site where great new information was posted regularly?\u00a0 Wouldn&#8217;t it be nice if instead of having to go to all of the sites you like to check if there was something new, if that information could just come to you?\u00a0 Wouldn&#8217;t it save a lot of time if you could find all of this new information in one place?<\/p>\n<p>Well&#8230;.you can!\u00a0 You may have seen a button like this and wondered what it was for.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" width=\"1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.globe.gov\/fsl\/images\/rsslogo_large.png\" height=\"1\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" width=\"128\" src=\"http:\/\/www.globe.gov\/fsl\/images\/rsslogo_large.png\" height=\"128\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That button is a common symbol for RSS used on the web.\u00a0 What RSS allows you to do is subscribe to web page content so that anytime new information is posted it is delivered to you just like the morning paper.\u00a0 The first step is to set up an RSS reader.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloglines.com\">Bloglines<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/reader.google.com\">Google Reader<\/a>\u00a0are two of the most popular, so I would pick one of those.\u00a0 The next step is to find content you want to subscribe to, such as a blog or news website that posts regular content.\u00a0 The final step is to add the link to the site&#8217;s RSS feed into your reader.\u00a0 Once you&#8217;ve done that you won&#8217;t have to go to the web site anymore.\u00a0 When new content is added, it will appear in your RSS reader and you can read it from there.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a video that does a much better job of explaining it:<\/p>\n<p><code><span class=\"vvqbox vvqflash\" style=\"width:425px;height:350px;\"><span id=\"vvq-13-flash-1\"><em>Please <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/support\/bin\/answer.py?answer=23852\">enable Javascript<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/shockwave\/download\/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash\">Flash<\/a> to view this Flash video.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/code><\/p>\n<p><code><\/code>When I first started subscribing to sites using RSS it didn&#8217;t seem like that big of a deal to me.\u00a0 After spending some time using it, though, I began to see how powerful it could be.\u00a0 The ability to connect to constant streams of information around specific topics or interests changes the nature of the web.\u00a0 It allows you to\u00a0follow ideas and people having conversations around those ideas from all over the world.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t have to go searching anymore.\u00a0\u00a0You can make the\u00a0information that you want come to you.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever found a really good web site where great new information was posted regularly?\u00a0 Wouldn&#8217;t it be nice if instead of having to go to all of the sites you like to check if there was something new, &hellip;
